How I Became an Inspired Cat Lady

Hello! My name is Rachel and I am the blogger here at Cat Lady AlleyWhere Curiosity Spoiled the Cat Lady! I’ve started this new blog as a place to share anything cat-related – and to ultimately inspire your inner cat lady.

I will be blogging about feline-inspired finds, review cute cat curiosities, host giveaways, and share anything that strikes my (cat lady) fancy.

But before I get to the sharing part, I’d like to take the time to introduce myself and provide a little background on why I refer to myself as an inspired cat lady.

A Cat Lady Gets Her Start

Do you remember the first time you cuddled a cat? Or were soothed by a cat’s purr? Or…um…had to clean a litter box?

I don’t. But that is only because I grew up with cats. The first time for me was likely when I was a toddler with my faithful calico cat, Janet, a former stray. I do however remember the “firsts” as an adult.

There was an 11-year gap between having a cat in my life. I went off to college at 18 and pets weren’t allowed in the dorms. As I started my adult life, my boyfriend at the time (now husband) and I adopted a dog as soon as we graduated from college. We both had dogs growing up; he’d never had cats. To add to our decision of adopting a dog, I had developed an allergy to cats in my teens.

Fast forward to June 20, 2010 – Father’s Day that year – to when a weak and starving three-week-old kitten literally stumbled across our path during a walk. I bet you can guess what happened next…

As I’m writing this now, that weak and starving kitten is now a sturdy, solid six-year-old mancat who is hanging out on my desk, purring away happily. Dexter likes to nudge his little pink nose under my hand when I’m typing to remind me to pet him. (Hold one sec, okay done.)

With two more cats now added to our household (Olive and Sophie), I have been called a crazy cat lady, to which I would prefer the term inspired cat lady. After all, what is crazy about having cats?

  • Is it the number of cats? (I have three. If I had 10, that’s still not crazy.)
  • Is it my actions as a cat mom? (It’s called loving your cats and doing what’s best for them.)
  • What is crazy about having cats? (Really, what is crazy about it?!?)

How I Became an Inspired Cat Lady

Moving along…what do I mean by inspired cat lady? My cats inspire me to be a better person. I really do mean that. I support organizations that care for cats (and all animals). I volunteer my time. I promote cat causes through my rescue blog.

Six years ago, was I doing any of that? Besides donating to animal-related groups, the answer is no! Thus, bringing cats into my life has inspired me and truly changed my life.

One of the greatest things I have found by immersing myself in cat life culture is the fellow cat lovers I’ve connected with. Dedicated cat rescuers, devoted cat moms and dads, passionate owners of cat companies, and fellow enthusiastic cat bloggers! What a wonderful community to belong to!

An inspired cat lady and her three cats!

You Can Be an Inspired Cat Lady, too!

If you’re reading this post, you are likely already an inspired cat lady (or dude). But if you’re not, it’s simple.

  1. Get a cat.
  2. Love the cat.
  3. Be inspired every day by the cat.

That’s all it takes! But what do you do after you’ve completed steps 1 through 3? What do you do with that newfound inspiration? That, my friend, is entirely up to you. A world of possibilities most assuredly awaits. Perhaps you’ve been inspired to start an art project. Maybe you make handmade cat toys and donate them to a shelter. Or, are you a writer and have a cat story to tell?

My latest inspiration was to start Cat Lady Alley. I’m excited about this new blogging adventure, but most of all, I hope you find inspiration here at Cat Lady Alley.

So, what inspires you? Let me know! I love seeing what inspires others.

  1. Wishing you great luck! This is what the popular cat blog (Catsparella) did for YEARS…….(she is now working for Purina and no longer blogs)…Cat Lady Confidential does this too. I am hoping that you will be charging for your product reviews in 2017………’s important that we all stop giving freebies unless the company/product is rescue oriented. Best of luck! Oh and be sure to email me your address…you are one of our rolling pin winners. cgittleman at mi dot rr dot com

  2. I love the term “inspired” cat lady, because I agree, there is nothing crazy about having cats and loving them with your whole heart. I grew up with outside with barn cats that i didn’t pay much attention to. I always thought I was a dog person. I was 36 when I adopted Waddles, and she changed me forever. My life has been blessed beyond measure by my cats. So they inspire me indeed.

  3. It’s nice to learn more ’bout you awnty Rachel. We luv dat you’re inspired by your kitties. We think they’re just gawjus by da way. And may we say you be just bootyful yourself. We can’t wait to see what you come up with next time. Big hugs fur all and have a great week.

  4. I can tell how excited and inspired you are! It’s so much fun to have passion for a new project. I look forward to reading future blogs! Best of luck to you.

  5. I can’t remember a time when I haven’t had a cat! Today my husband and I are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary and yes, seriously, he gave me a kitten instead of an engagement ring! I am a serious cat lady! Looking forward to what new stories and words of wisdom you bring our way!

  6. I love your new blog, great idea. I also love your header design. Nice to learn how you got into cats. I never had a cat growing up, it wasn’t until I met my hubby and he had one that I fell in love.

  7. I can’t wait to see what you post here! My babies inspire me, too. I believe I am a better person because of the lessons my babies teach me, and I strive to be the best mom I can to them. I love your term, “Inspired Cat Lady.” I don’t know why people think we are “crazy” – there’s nothing crazy about loving such precious creatures. <3

  8. I’m happy to see you start a new blog! It will be exciting to see what new ideas, stories, etc. You’ll be putting forward. All the loving cat people and their wonderful cats…I however will say that aside of being a major cat enthusiast I might be a little crazy cat lady too. Haha. This is wonderful! Look forward to the emails and future posts!

  9. Hello. It’s always good to welcome a new cat-blogger. I see you already have a good number of comments; that’s excellent. I like the header, especially. You may want to send an email to the Cat Blogosphere ( and let them know you’re blogging; they may give you a bit of publicity.

I’m inspired by seeing cats and dogs who aren’t as fortunate as the ones adopted by kind people. Each animal saved is one closer to saving them all.

  10. I absolutely LOVE the term “inspired cat lady!” It’s about time we lost that crazy moniker! I just started my cat art blog this year too, and it’s brought me so much joy. No doubt, cat lovers are a great community, online and off. Wishing you great success. I’m sure we’ll cross paths again. 🙂

  11. This is fabulous!!! This is one of my favorite topics on our blog too…I love everything “cat lady” related, especially featuring fun cat-themed items, so we’ll be visiting frequently!

  12. Amazing post! I can relate so much. My rescue Athena inspires me to do great things too. She is my muse as well as my little fur daughter. And I don’t care if I’m called crazy. If people don’t understand, it’s their loss. To quote Charles Dickens, ‘What greater gift than the love of a cat?’

Good luck with the new blog. I think it’s a fantastic idea 🙂

We inspire the P.A. daily, resulting in many of our wild adventures that mew get to read about on our blog… the P.A. says ‘a life without cats would be no life at all!’

In the famous wurds of Arnie… we’ll be back! MOL MOL

  14. Congratulations on your new…inspiring Blog, kitties and Rachel. I know Granny was inspired when she first lay eyes on a best furriend, who happened to be a pussycat, when she was about 8 years old. Grandpaw always wishes he was one too…MOL 😀 He is an inspired Cat Dude, btw 😉 Good Luck Pawkisses for your new blog 🙂 <3

  15. I like this term, Inspired Cat Lady! I like to say I came out as a Cat Lady when i discovered the first two tiny mammary tumors on my GinnyCat! Although the fight against the cancer was lost after 6 months Ginny inspired me by her fight to enjoy every day of her life with catitude and gusto! 16 years with her was many years too short! She inspired me to adopt two new Calico kids shortly after her passing at the beginning of this year! Inspire, how appropriate, thank you Cat Lady Alley!
